Extra Fishing Trip Safety Pointers

Never go on the lake fishing without some munchies and bottled water to drink. Something about being outdoors seems to increase appetites.

Do not drink untreated water, even spring water, even if you are in the deep backcountry, even if the water is cold and crystal clear. Giardia Lamblia, a waterborne parasite found in many untreated water sources in the back-country. This can cause ‘Beaver Fever’, a terrible and painful, life-long disease!

Bring along a top-rated Katadyn water filter kit.

Keep fishing knives sharp with a professional knife sharpening system at home and a portable knife sharpener in the tackle box.  Cover the blade when not in use.

Handle fish carefully. The teeth of a Northern Pike and dorsal fin spines of a Walleye are sharp. Should you get cut, clean and treat the injury with antibacterial ointment to avoid infection.

Use caution when removing hooks. Fish often jump and wiggle at this time, increasing the risk of a barbed hook sticking into your hand or fingers.

Always make sure you bring either a good map of the area and a compass or a Garmin GPS unit if you plan to go hiking. Pack a small survival kit in your Fanny Pack - just in case you run into a McGuyver situation out there.

Capture Your Memories!

Bring along a digital camera to capture your memories.

If nothing else, you can buy a waterproof camera bag to stuff in your Fanny Pack. You never know when you might catch the big one and without a snapshot, who’s gonna believe you?

Besides, the scenery is spectacular and you just might chance on some of our wildlife; moose, bears, foxes, bald eagles, ducks, loons, squirrels, otters, muskrats, mink and lots of beaver, to name but a few.

What to Bring Fishing

Before you head to the lake for the first fishing trip of the season, remember: you need to prepare for more than just catching fish.

The Fishing Trip Check List  may look like you should pack everything but the kitchen sink – but if you take care when packing, you will find that everything fits easily.

Remember it’s easier to carry it along than to go all the way back to get it!

Give all equipment, tackle and gear a good inspection as you pack. A little maintenance of your rod and reel while you are still at home can save you from disapointment due to broken or jammed fishing gear while you are on the lake!

    Protect yourself from insect bites

Always wear sunscreen that is waterproof, odourless and non-greasy, with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 - even if it’s cloudy overhead. One bad sunburn during childhood can double the risk of skin cancer later in life. Use it, and use it often. See the trusted Dermatone Tins and Sol Sunguard brands.

Protect yourself from insect bites by dressing properly, using insect repellents, and using a screen tent. Deet is the most effective ingredient for repelling insects. Some years the mosquitoes, no-seeums and black flies will probably be worse than you think.

Keep the mosquitoes away – and you’ll help ensure a much better fishing trip for everyone.

Sunglasses with UV block protect your eyes from dangerous sunrays. Polarized sunglasses help reduce glare off the water, making visibility better. Amber or vermillion color is best. Sunglasses also provide an extra degree of safety when casting or hiking through the bush.

Wear a baseball cap while fishing. Better yet, wear a brimmed fishing hat so the brim keeps the sun out of your eyes and protects your ears from sun-burning.

Clothes and Weather on your Fishing Trip

Weather is always a factor when planning a family camping adventure, a quick hike or a fishing trip in Canada.

Murphy’s Law states: because you have chosen to go fishing, the odds of rain go up.

Check the forecast for weather warning before any fishing trip, but be prepared for rain or shine and chilly cold nights. A small transistor radio may help keep you informed of any approaching bad weather.

One silver lining to a cloudy, rainy day – the fish bite better!

A cheap rain parka folds up as small as a bandana and fits nicely in your Fanny Pack or tackle box.

Stay dry, warm, and protected from the elements. Temperatures range from the low 50’s to the high 90’s during the summer and it is not unusual to experience this change all in one day.

Experienced anglers wear thin layers of clothing, and progress outward to include water and wind protection as the final layer.

Always wear footgear appropriate to the conditions. No sandals or open-toed shoes. Check out these trail running shoes that are ideal for casual hikers and trail running.
