Extra Fishing Trip Safety Pointers

Never go on the lake fishing without some munchies and bottled water to drink. Something about being outdoors seems to increase appetites.

Do not drink untreated water, even spring water, even if you are in the deep backcountry, even if the water is cold and crystal clear. Giardia Lamblia, a waterborne parasite found in many untreated water sources in the back-country. This can cause ‘Beaver Fever’, a terrible and painful, life-long disease!

Bring along a top-rated Katadyn water filter kit.

Keep fishing knives sharp with a professional knife sharpening system at home and a portable knife sharpener in the tackle box.  Cover the blade when not in use.

Handle fish carefully. The teeth of a Northern Pike and dorsal fin spines of a Walleye are sharp. Should you get cut, clean and treat the injury with antibacterial ointment to avoid infection.

Use caution when removing hooks. Fish often jump and wiggle at this time, increasing the risk of a barbed hook sticking into your hand or fingers.

Always make sure you bring either a good map of the area and a compass or a Garmin GPS unit if you plan to go hiking. Pack a small survival kit in your Fanny Pack - just in case you run into a McGuyver situation out there.

Capture Your Memories!

Bring along a digital camera to capture your memories.

If nothing else, you can buy a waterproof camera bag to stuff in your Fanny Pack. You never know when you might catch the big one and without a snapshot, who’s gonna believe you?

Besides, the scenery is spectacular and you just might chance on some of our wildlife; moose, bears, foxes, bald eagles, ducks, loons, squirrels, otters, muskrats, mink and lots of beaver, to name but a few.
